Over 50 varieties — all locally grown in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties!
We are proud to work with three exceptional local growers to provide you with a complete selection of organic and/or locally-produced vegetable and herb starts. We support:
Keep your money local!
Of course, 99% of these plants are not California native plants — instead they include some of the most popular food plants, and maybe a few that aren’t so popular, but should be!
At the height of their respective growing seasons, we carry up to:
- 40 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, including:
- ‘Cherokee Purple’
- ‘Russian Black’
- ‘Yellow Brandywine’
- 30 varieties of hot & mild peppers, including:
- habanero
- serrano
- pimiento
- 30 varieties of summer and hot-weather vegetables, including:
- heirloom melons
- heirloom eggplants
- heirloom corn
- heirloom beans
- heirloom squash
- 30 varieties of culinary and medicinal herbs, including:
- stevia
- cilantro
- comfrey
- culinary sage
- 20 varieties of greens and lettuces, including:
- spinach
- chard
- arugula
- kale
- collard greens
- heirloom lettuces
- 20 varieties of fall and winter vegetables, including:
- Brussells sprouts
- artichokes
- fava beans
- winter tomatoes
Heirloom varieties are those that have been grown for at least 50 years (and sometimes for hundreds of years!)
At first, the idea may seem completely backward … why is a native plant nursery selling vegetables? But as our family says, they didn’t raise no dummies! We realize that the chance to grow your own food is one of the most powerful and popular reasons that people get into gardening in the first place.
You see, we aren’t against using water, let’s just be a little smarter about how we use it! If you aren’t using your lawn anymore, why not replace it with a vegetable garden? Instead of consistently watering a few shrubs you aren’t really wild about, how about growing some of your own herbs and veggies, organically?
As noted above, selection varies greatly by season, stop on by or contact the nursery for a complete list of what’s available.
